The Best Thing I’ve Seen Today: What Prince, Lady Gaga, And Britney Spears Eat Backstage, Rendered As Classic Still Lifes
What Beyoncé wants, Beyoncé gets, or she’s not going on stage. Intrigued by this contractual dynamic, photographer Henry Hargreaves set out to find how food figures into these demands.
Hargreaves obtained riders (formal agreements with the venue and celebrity that quantifies the terms of performance) from some of the world’s top pop musicians and based his project around the foodstuffs specified by each of the performers. Working with stylist Caitlin Levin, Hargreaves assembled still lifes using the items found in the riders: “fresh” Wonder Bread and Dom Perignon for Axl Rose, a small plate of (“non-sweaty”) cheese, chilled on ice, for Lady Gaga.
Hargreaves finds food an effective medium for understanding a little about each artist. “I love the way people’s tastes in food say something that we often can’t articulate ourselves,” he says. Years ago, Hargreaves did a similar project, photographing the last meals of serial killers…. however, there’s something about the classical styling of the pop-stars series that captivates. PRINCE: Prince always has a coffee and tea setup, with honey, lemon, sugar, cream, fresh ginger root. Don’t forget the B-12 injection!
BRITNEY SPEARS: Spears orders fish and chips, McDonald’s cheeseburgers without the buns, 100 prunes and figs, and, maybe most crucially, a framed photo of Princess Diana.
BEYONCE: Bey has freshly baked (and “juicy”) chicken, heavily seasoned with garlic, sea salt, pepper, and cayenne. The singer is contractually limited to consuming Pepsi products.
LADY GAGA: Gaga likes to have a (small) plate of “non sweaty” cheese, chilled on ice, waiting for her after a show.
BILLY IDOL: One tub of I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter! and Pepperidge Farms Soft Baked Nantucket Chocolate Chip Cookies.
MARILYN MANSON: Manson just wants Gummy Bears.
NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK: The ur-boy band chills out with Häagen-Dazs ice cream and Oreos.
